Friday night is music night
With my writing work done for the weekend, I have been enjoying having a bit of time to relax.
Because the last thing I had to do tonight was send some messages to people in Second Life, talking about the April Poetry Challenge, I happened to be ‘in world’ at the time that JWheels Carver sent out a message to the ‘Inksters’ writing group saying a guy called Acoustic Energy Nightly was playing a live gig at St Leo’s University.
That sounded like something I might enjoy, so I teleported over before the sim (technical term for a section of virtual land) filled up. Popular events can fill up quickly, so it’s always a good idea to get in as quick as you can if you want to go to an event. It’s a lot like real life in that way.
That reminds me of the time I saw Terry Pratchett in Second Life. He was there doing a brief talk followed by a question and answer session to promote ‘Nation’, which was then his latest novel. I turned up about an hour and ten minutes before he was due to start and the sim already had nineteen other people on it!
Why do I remember how many there were there? I was reporting on the event for the Second Life News Network. It was one of my last assignments for them as a journalist with a roving beat. I became Art Director for their real world publication, SLNN Next, soon after. (That was quite a change, I can tell you!) It was a fun job while it lasted. It started as my first foray into freelancing, too. Funny how the world works.
Anyway, I have to say Acoustic Nightly put on what was probably the best live event I’ve been to in Second Life for a long time. He has an amazing voice and I would recommend going along to hear him if you can.
JWheels keeps a blog about events in Second Life so you can find out when he’s next playing. I would put up a link to a YouTube recording but there aren’t any, unfortunately.
Speaking of music, I was pointed toward this very cool music video by MBC News:
It was the imagery that first caught my eye but the song itself is great too. Jenny says it reminds her a lot of Ladytron and I think I see where she’s getting that from. It certainly is in the same broad style.
So there you have it: Second Life is not just for writers and people who want to pretend to have sex with other people pretending to have sex. There is music there, too. There is also art there but I’ll have to cover that another time because this is getting too long.
